Estate planning is for...

Singles

Whether you're getting married, in a long-term relationship, or happily single, an estate plan gives you a say in who makes decisions for you and who receives your assets. Without one, those decisions may be left up to state law instead of your wishes.

Newly Married Couples

For a long time, estate planning was seen as something you did later in life, after retirement, or after building significant wealth. But that mindset is changing, and for good reason. More adults are creating estate plans earlier because life doesn't wait, and neither do the responsibilities that come with it.

Having children often prompts people to start planning, but they're not the only family members who depend on us. Pets, aging parents, and close friends we want to inherit our assets are reasons many people decide it's time to put a plan in place.

For many, our pets are our family. If something were to happen to you, your plan can specify exactly who gets your pet, who will manage the funds for their care, etc.

Married with no children

Not Wealthy

Estate planning is not exclusively for those with extreme amounts of wealth. Estate planning is for everyone, with families of all different sizes and wealth levels.

The reality is that most people have assets worth protecting. Whether it is their children, their pets, their home, or even a baseball card collection, a great estate plan will protect what matters to you, big or small.

What's in your estate plan

Financial Power of Attorney

Health Care Power of Attorney

Living Will / Healthcare Decree

HIPAA Authorization

Names someone you trust to handle your financial matters if you can't. You choose the scope (limited or general) and when it takes effect. Without one, a judge decides for you in a public proceeding.

Names someone to communicate with your doctors and make the medical decisions you would make, on your behalf if you're unable to.

Puts your end-of-life wishes in writing, so your loved ones aren't left guessing during an already difficult time.

Gives people you choose access to your medical information (without giving them decision-making authority) often smooths over family tension during a health crisis.

A safety net that directs anything not already in your trust into it, and is also where guardians for minor children are named.

Pour-Over
Will

Revocable
Living Trust

Created during your lifetime, changeable anytime you're able to, and it keeps your family out of probate court. You stay in control as trustee while you're living

Short-Term Appointment of Guardian

Names a temporary guardian for your minor children, for a trip, a hospitalization, or another defined period, up to 365 days.

Why a Trust may be Right for You

If you don't have a plan, or only have a will, probate will likely be necessary, and the details become a matter of public record. A trust can avoid court oversight, and keeps your information between your trustee and your beneficiaries.

From our clients

"Irene is a very thoughtful and thorough. Irene took her time to explain the legal documents and differences in options I had. I had also been undergoing medical treatment, and Irene was very sensitive to my condition, checking and sending a gift, going above and beyond expectations."

"I write to enthusiastically recommend Irene Caminer and Caminer Law, LLC to any group, family or individual chasing sound, level-headed and intelligent legal counsel for business planning and/or estate needs. Our family just completed an estate planning process with Irene and we couldn't be more satisfied with the results. "

"I was continually impressed by Irene's thoughtful and intentional style of practice. Irene consistently demonstrated the qualities necessary to work effectively with a family engaged in what can be an uncomfortable at times set of conversations: she combines great intellectual aptitude, dedication, organization, warmth and rigor with a commitment to working with people of all backgrounds. Irene engaged our entire family with respect and care. Irene asked great questions and was incredibly well-organized. We finished the process with our documents accurate, complete and in one-place both on paper and electronically. She was a true pleasure to work with and I recommend her services without reservation."
